4 tips to protect babies and small children from the heat
The past few years temperatures in northern Europe have been as high if not higher than here so there´s another good reason to come on holiday to Ibiza as the villas here are built to keep the heat out and otherwise they have A/C whoopy, something that’s still very much missing in northern European houses.
Sunny days is what we all want on our holidays but when it gets too hot, it becomes a bit of a concern for many parents especially with very young babies. Should that stop you from taking a holiday to Ibiza? No but taking a few precautions to make sure that everyone is happy, relaxed and chilled definitely helps.
Beach hours
Tourists tend to make fun of the locals arriving at the beach around the same time they are leaving (and vice versa). Why do locals do the things they do, you might ask? Is it maybe because they know that hanging on a beach at 13:00 is way too hot? When you´re a tired parent running on 2 hours sleep with a small child you might want to consider relaxing by your pool and going to the beach in the afternoon and stay a bit longer so you might enjoy an amazing sundown.
Try to avoid direct sun between the hours of 11:00 to 15:00. If you go to the beach make sure you have a beach tent with you so your baby can sleep and play in the shade.
Sun screen and UV clothing
UV clothing are such a life saver, trying to put sunscreen on a baby/toddler is about as hard as trying to put a live octopus in a tiny plastic bag with one arm. Don´t forget to take it off when they´re having a nap as it can get very hot. Plus nowadays they come in really cool colours and designs!
Eating and drinking
If you notice your baby wanting to feed more that’s normal because your milk has some amazing thirst quenching properties. He´ll be drinking more but for shorter periods, hey who doesn’t like a chupito? Always offer plenty of milk/ water and of course if everyone is too hot, there´s always ice cream!!
Going on a stroll
Never ever put a blanket over your pram to protect your little one from the sun! Use a parasol or put the stroller in the shade. A Swedish research concluded that with a parasol the interior heat in a pram was kept at 22 degrees between the hours of 11:00 to 13:00 but with a blanket the temperature soared to 31 degrees within half an hour! Also better not to let your baby sleep in a carrier because there´s no air circulation either.
